In light of our recent conversations and since i am the oldest and often most opinionated, I thought it a perfect time to impart some of my 'wisdom' on life. I know our roads will not be the same but who knows these could be used as markers or small road signs along the way.
It is never too late to start something new or different; if you want to do that degree, do it. If you want to learn to ride that bicycle, start now. Postponing might sound easier but what you don’t realise is how fast time goes by and before you realise it your twenties are over and you will be approaching another decade with nothing tangible to show for it. Whether you believe me or not, this here life is short.
Embrace your femininity ladies; being a woman isn't always easy, so you don’t need self hate to break you down even further in a world of negativity. Whether you have curves or not becomes irrelevant when you learn to love who you are. God does not make flaws, he makes us uniquely perfect.
Whether you do it in the benches of a church or alone in your quiet moments, take the time to know God. If there is one thing in this life i have learnt over and over again it is that He is omnipotent (all-ruling), omnipresent (present everywhere), and omniscient (understanding of our intentions even before we are). So when those times get hard remember you are never alone or forgotten.
Find people that you can love; it might sound ironic but love is meant to be shared and given away otherwise it defeats its purpose. So even though you might have been hurt and had your heart stomped on remember that unconditional love that you share with your daughter, sister/s and brother/s, now imagine sharing some of that with the world. The most profound things happen in this life when you are willing to share of yourself.
There is a need for more kindness; so smile at that stranger because there will come a time when you will need that same kind of karma back; speak to the stranger on the bus because right there you might find the different perspective needed to change the world. Kindness is just that simple yet we take it for granted in little ways everyday.
Let me just say that i am without doubt so proud of you, you have grown from the loudest teenagers i have ever met into these incredibly strong young woman and i am glad i have been there through the tantrums, the boy dramas and the lectures (mostly provided by me). I would not trade a minute of our friendship and our fights for in and through them i have learnt that family is not just defined by blood.
A Blog about my journey through life; the people i meet, the friendships i discover and the joys of living life my way

Writing my BOOK
I love to read, I can literally spend hours in the thrills
of a good novel and completely cut the world out so that the characters and I can
embark on a journey together. I have a very visual imagination so I often find
that it would put it into pictures hence I am not picky about endings as long
as at the end I can feel like “I got it”, like I understood the plot.

| Little Me |
Lately I have been thinking of life (my own) as a book; with
all its chapters culminating various stages, highlights and lowlights of my 27
years on this planet. Granted this is not as long as most, but I sure have
learnt a thing or two.
It would have to starting with my first fond memories of
garden tea parties when I was 4, through to my peculiar child hood where I have
always had an opinion and a mother who would listen to my every entertaining
word – when I was 7/8 I refused to go to bed at bedtime because I felt that my
brain didn’t need all the hours of sleep and I would become so animated in my
theory that my parents would just let me stay up.
Through my odd days as a teenager, I was not a difficult
teen but I was definitely always different
- I preferred a good book over parties, drugs or boys. There is a part of me now that thinks I have
taken the world way too seriously before my time and another that is grateful
that I have somehow always known myself enough to know when to stop, step ahead
or step away.
My journey from18 to now would be the bulk of it; because
here I have learnt about love (the kind that does not change or falter), loss (as
no-one lives forever), sacrifice (the art of walking away), friendships (the
kind that deals with shit and still stands) and to chase my dreams even if it
takes me a little longer to get there.
I am not sure which chapter I am on right now however I
think turning 28 in a few months will probably require a few new priorities.
It
promises to be interesting!

Things i have Learnt along the way
I am always amazed at how we change over time, how what was important yesterday ceases to bother us today. With that in mind I have been thinking about the lessons I have learnt from the past.
Here are a few that stand out for me.
1. I have learnt that Pride is a fickle thing and can steal precious time, so always take a moment to say sorry and to reflect on the past so you can appreciate the present.
2. Money is like water, there will be spells of drought and times of floods. So spend it wisely and NEVER let it become your ruler.
3. Don’t rush to get to your destination because you may just miss the views and lessons on the road. In the detours i have learnt some of my greatest lessons yet.
4. Take the time to fall in love, its value is greater than we give it credit for and in it lies many lessons about life, sacrifice and devotion that cannot be taught in books.
5. Scream when you must, cry when you have too and laugh as much as you can because the older we get the more we realise how serious we once were.
6. As cliché as it may sound, the moment is all there is. The worries, lists and plans for the future are all distraction that hinders us from fully living. So throw them out and cease the moment, you might be amazed at where it leads you.
7. Be comfortable in your own skin; it’s the only one you have so embrace the curves, love what you have and the rest shall follow.
8. Regardless of what behavioural science say you can’t motivate people, the best you can hope for is to inspire them to act based on your actions.
9. There are great joys of this world that do not cost a cent so don’t take them for granted; to me they are reading a good book, taking a long walk, having an engaging conversation, getting lost in the smell of the ocean or a breathtaking sight and of course a good hug.
10. Failures are the stepping stones to success, without them their will have been no trials so do not let your fears stop you from trying.
I know that life has many more lessons to teach me and I look forward to embracing them all, one day at a time.

Remembering those we sometimes forget
Four years ago i set foot inside my first prison, the walls were narrow and the gates were high. I remember the smell of stale air, a sense of hopelessness and the looks of the people saying the same thing.
I walked in, filled with a bit of fear and a tinge of excitement because i have always wondered if South African prisons are like the ones in movies. It was nothing like the movies; the reality was far worse.
Even though I got to go home after every session, to this day I remember many of their stories.
Some there for crimes that they committed some for the sins of other and many silenced by gangs and the false sense of brotherhood it provides. There I witnessed how fast innocents can be stolen and easily freedom can be forgotten.
The youngest boy was 9, there for murdering someone with a butcher’s knife after being beaten countless times. The oldest 18 there for rape and murder after being so high, he had to prove a point of being “the man” to his friends. Many of the stories i have heard resonates with me as i look around my surroundings and see the daily fight for survival. Many of them did not ask for the hand that they were dealt, some abandoned to a life on the street with no food or shelter. I am sadden when i think how many of them had their first encounter with the law for taking a bread without having the money to pay for it. Whenever i walk by a child on the street homeless and alone my heart bleeds because i remember the stories of how it began for many of them.
In my four years i have worked with hundreds of young men and women in conflict with the law and sadly many of them will never know true freedom because in prison a different death occurs. It is not the kind known every day by you and me, it is a death of the soul, a death of dreams and hopes because they go to jail as innocents, as children and there they learn a life of gangsterism.
My plea is simple; the next time you see a child on the street begging a hand out give them a meal. The next time you see a young man slipping through the cracks lend them a hand.
